No bread in the house? Try making these flat breads. Tasty and versatile they can been used as a base or side for many dishes to make a meal. Children will love helping to make these too.
Cooking Time: Approx 4 minutes each
- 250g of plain flour (plus more for shaping them)
- ½ teaspoon of baking powder
- 2 tablespoons of oil – you will need some more for cooking
- 100mls of warm water
- 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt (optional)
- ½ teaspoon of salt
You can also add mixed herbs, fennel seeds, coriander, chilli or garlic for more flavour.
Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl. You can start with a wooden spoon but then begin to work it together with your hands.
Bring the mixture together to make a dough. It should be smooth not sticky, so add a little more flour or water if needed to get the right consistency.
Knead (push and punch) the dough for a few minutes.
Split the dough into small balls and roll them out so they are flat, large circles to fit your frying pan.
Lightly coat the pan with a little oil and heat the pan and cook one flatbread for about 2 minutes until it has puffed up a little and then flip it over for it to cook for another 2 minutes.
Keep cooking the flatbreads, adding a bit more oil to the pan if needed to stop them sticking.
You can keep them warm in a low oven until they are ready to serve.
Tip – Top with chopped tomatoes and cheese with some vegetables. Grill until the cheese is melted to make your own pizzas.
